What Is Christian Counseling, and Is It Right for You?
Maybe you have been thinking about therapy for a while. You have done a little research, scrolled through some therapist profiles, and then paused when you saw the phrase "Christian counseling." You might be wondering: Is that just therapy with Bible verses sprinkled in? Do I have to be a certain kind of Christian to go? What if I am not sure where I stand in my faith right now?
These are good questions, and you deserve honest answers. Here is what Christian counseling actually is, who it is for, and how to know if it might be the right fit for you.
So, What Is Christian Counseling?
Christian counseling is licensed, evidence-based mental health therapy that also integrates faith as part of the healing process. That means your therapist is clinically trained, uses research-backed approaches, and also welcomes conversations about how your faith, values, and spirituality connect to what you are working through.
At Little Hearts Big Hearts Counseling, we use a Biblical and evidence-based framework. That does not mean every session starts with a devotional or that you will be handed a list of scriptures when things get hard. It means that if your faith is part of your story, it is welcome in the room. We hold space for all of it.
What Christian Counseling Is Not
This is worth saying clearly, because there are some misconceptions worth clearing up.
Christian counseling is not: advice-giving disguised as therapy, a replacement for prayer or spiritual direction, only for people who attend church regularly, or a judgment-free zone except it is actually full of judgment.
A good Christian counselor will never tell you that you just need to pray more, or suggest that your struggles are a sign of weak faith. That kind of response is harmful, not helpful, and it is not what we practice here.
Who Is It For?
Christian counseling can be a great fit if you are someone who values faith as part of your identity and wants a therapist who understands that. It can also be a good fit if you are in a season of spiritual questioning and want a space where that feels safe to explore.
You do not have to have it all figured out. You do not have to be "spiritual enough." You just have to be willing to show up.
At LHBH, we serve individuals, kids, teens, and couples. Our therapists specialize in grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. We also have deep experience walking alongside those navigating infertility, miscarriage, and pregnancy loss, areas where faith questions and grief often intertwine in deeply personal ways.
How Do You Know If It Is Right for You?
Here are a few questions to sit with:
• Do I want a therapist who is open to talking about faith if it comes up?
• Am I looking for a space where my spiritual life is not treated as irrelevant or awkward?
• Do I want care that honors the whole of who I am, not just the clinical parts?
If you answered yes to any of those, Christian counseling might be worth exploring. And if you are still not sure, that is okay too. You can always reach out and ask questions before you commit to anything.
