What Happens in a First Therapy Session? Here's What to Expect
If you have never been to therapy before, or if it has been a long time, the thought of that first session can bring up a lot of anxiety. What do I even say? Are they going to judge me? Will I have to talk about things I am not ready for?
The short answer: no. A good first session is not about diving deep into your darkest moments. It is about starting to build a relationship. Here is what you can actually expect.
Before You Walk In
You will typically complete some intake paperwork before your first appointment. This might include information about what brings you to therapy, a little personal history, and some practical logistics like billing and consent forms. It is not a test. There are no wrong answers.
When you arrive, you can expect a warm environment. At Little Hearts Big Hearts Counseling, we have put a lot of care into making sure our office feels comfortable and fully private. There is complimentary coffee, tea, and water. You will never run into other clients in a shared waiting room.
What the Session Actually Looks Like
Your first session is typically called an intake or initial assessment. It runs a little longer than a regular session, about 60 minutes, and it is mostly a conversation. Your therapist will ask some questions to get to know you: What brought you in? What has life been like lately? What are you hoping to get out of this?
You get to decide how much to share and at what pace. There is no pressure to tell your whole story on day one. Some people share a lot. Some people share a little and feel out the space first. Both are completely normal.
You Are Also Interviewing Your Therapist
This is something a lot of people do not realize: the first session goes both ways. You are not just being evaluated. You are also figuring out if this person feels like someone you can trust and open up to over time.
It is okay if the first therapist you meet is not the right fit. It is okay to ask questions. It is okay to sit with it for a few days before deciding whether to continue. A good therapist will understand and respect that.
What You Will Not Have to Do
You will not have to have everything figured out before you come in. You will not have to know exactly what you want to work on or have a polished explanation of your problems. You will not be pushed to go somewhere you are not ready to go. And you will not be judged for how you got here.
After the Session
It is common to feel a mix of things after a first session. Relief, because you finally did it. Maybe a little emotionally tired, because even a relatively light conversation about personal things takes energy. Sometimes people feel lighter. Sometimes they feel more aware of things they had been pushing down.
All of that is okay. It is part of the process.
