The Basics: is this depression?
We all have tough days—times when we feel low, unmotivated, or just “off.” But when those feelings stick around or begin to interfere with your daily life, it might be more than just a rough patch. So how can you tell if what you’re feeling could be depression?
Here are some common signs:
You’ve lost interest in things you used to enjoy. Hobbies, social plans, or even small pleasures feel like a chore—or no longer matter to you.
Your energy is low. You feel drained even after sleeping or find it hard to get out of bed and go about your day.
Your mood feels heavy. Sadness, emptiness, or irritability hang around more days than not.
You’re sleeping or eating differently. Whether it’s sleeping too much or too little, eating more or losing your appetite—these shifts can be red flags.
You feel hopeless or stuck. It’s hard to see a way forward or imagine things getting better.
You’re withdrawing. You’ve started isolating, canceling plans, or feeling like a burden to others.
If several of these feel familiar—and they’ve lasted more than a couple of weeks—it may be time to talk to someone. Depression isn’t a personal failure. It’s a treatable condition, and you don’t have to manage it alone.
